What are Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks are red marks which sometimes appear on the skin if it is stretched beyond its normal elasticity. This usually happens if weight has been gained very rapidly. As a result many pregnant women develop stretch marks.
What are the Causes of Stretch Marks?
Some pregnant women don’t get them. However, probably as many as three quarters of pregnant women get some stretch marks. If you are naturally thin or small or if you are carrying more than one baby , you are particularly develop some stretch marks. You may also develop them on your breasts if your breasts are naturally small and prone to rapid growth during pregnancy.
Traditional Medical Treatments for Stretch Marks?
Unfortunately stretch marks very rarely disappear. However the good news is that they often fade over time . They get smaller and lose their red colour, making them less noticeable. Rubbing oils or cream into the skin will not get rid of stretch marks.
Complementary/Alternative Treatments for Stretch Marks
Creams which claim to work on stretch marks are applied to the external layer of skin, but it is the layer underneath this which stretches. You can, however, take care not to put on too much weight, by maintaining a healthy balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Avoid eating too many high-fat foods or fast food and those containing additives and preservatives which may affect your fluid retention. Drinking plenty of water is also important to keep your skin supple and well hydrated. Drink at least eight glasses of water every day.
