Bad breath is the common name for the medical condition known as halitosis . There are many different things that can cause halitosis - from not brushing your teeth to certain medical conditions.

What are the Causes of Bad Breath

Here are three common causes of bad breath:

  • Dental decay or gum disease.
  • Food stagnation between the teeth.
  • Throat or tonsil infection.
  • Catarrh.
  • Bronchitis.
  • Sinusitis.
  • Gastritis (inflammation of mucous membrane that lines the stomach).

Traditional Medical Treatments for Bad Breath

First and most obviously, pay close attention to your oral and dental hygiene: brush and floss frequently, as recommended by your dentist.

  • Use a mouthwash recommended by your dentist.
  • Clean your mouth after eating milk products, fish and meat, that includes brushing your tongue.
  • Eat fresh vegetables.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, but cut down on coffee.
  • Chew sugar-free gum, especially if your mouth feels dry.
  • Don't smoke cigarettes.
  • Visit your dentist regularly.
