If you’re under the impression that the only thing a holiday can offer is rest and recreation, you’re making a big mistake. There are at least 12 important reasons to take a break – reasons you’re probably not aware of – and these are directly related to good physical health and mental well-being. Experts insist that holidays are a vital necessity and not a luxury, and here’s the reason why. For as long as people have been working, i.e. since the concept of "work" was discovered, the value of regular breaks or rest has been recognized. Our bodies need a detox from the "toxins" of work, as well as a more general break from the stress and pollution generated by life in urban centers. But a holiday is essential even for those not residing in built-up areas or those not working. The reason for this is that monotony reduces the efficiency of brain cells and, in order to regain this, they require new surroundings and new stimulants. Holidays are essential for another reason too: whereas in the past, manual labor and a lack of transport meant that a worker had difficulty in finding the time to get away, these days the exact opposite holds true. That is, modern living and working conditions create the need to find time to take a break.
