What is Vaginal Itching

Cancer of the vagina, is a rare kind of cancer in women. In vaginal cancer, cancer (malignant) cells are found in the tissues of the vagina. The vagina is the passageway through which fluid passes out of the body during menstrual periods and through which a woman has babies. The vagina is also called the "birth canal." The vagina connects the cervix (the opening of the womb or uterus) and the vulva (the folds of skin around the opening to the vagina).

What are the Causes of Vaginal Itching

Vaginal or vulval itching is usually caused by an allergic reaction to chemicals in deodorants, spermicides or creams. It is also common following the menopause, when it is caused by vaginal dryness due to low levels of oestrogen. It may also be caused by a vaginal discharge due to an infection. Vulval dystrophies (a group of vulval skin changes) can also cause itching.

Traditional Medical Treatments for Vaginal Itching

Your doctor may recommend antibiotic or antifungal drugs or hormones, sometimes taken orally (by mouth) or in a cream form. If vaginal dryness is contributing to the itching problem, simple vaginal lubricants can be helpful

Complementaty/Alternative Treatments for Vaginal Itching

To prevent and treat vaginal itching:

• Keep your genital area clean and dry. Use plain, unscented soap.
• Avoid colored or perfumed toilet tissue and bubble bath.
• Wear cotton panties or pantyhose with a cotton crotch. Avoid panties made from synthetic materials. For infants and toddlers, change diapers often.
• Change out of wet clothing, especially wet bathing suits or exercise clothing, as soon as possible.
• Avoid feminine hygiene sprays and douches.
• Eat yogurt with live cultures or take lactobacillus acidophilus tablets when using antibiotics. Check with your doctor.
• Cleanse by wiping or washing from front to back (vagina to anus) after urinating or having a bowel movement.
• Lose weight if you are over weight.
• Keep your blood sugars under good control if you have diabetes.
